Quad Sprayers in Ireland: Choosing a Tank, Pump and Boom for Your Land

Spraying thistles and docks with a backpack sprayer eats a whole day and leaves your shoulders sore. A quad sprayer covers the same ground in a fraction of the time, which is why you see them on so many Irish farms and estates.

This guide covers quad sprayers and what to check before you buy one: tank size, pump, boom or lance, and how to keep the whole rig working for years.

What a Quad Sprayer Does

A tank sits on the quad’s rack or on a small trailer. A 12-volt pump, usually wired to the quad’s battery, pushes liquid through a hose to a hand lance, a boom, or both. Treat a patch of rushes with the lance, then swap to the boom for a wider strip. Simple.

A tractor-mounted sprayer wins on big, open fields. A quad wins everywhere a tractor struggles: steep ground, soft ground, small fields and awkward headlands. The wider sprayers range covers jobs smaller or larger than a quad can handle, and the chemical sprayer accessories page has spare nozzles, hoses and fittings.

Choosing the Tank Size

Water weighs a kilo a litre, so a full tank is a serious load to strap above your back wheels. Check the rack load rating in your quad’s manual before anything else.

Tank size	Suits	Watch for
25 to 60 litres	Gardens, small paddocks, spot treatment	Frequent refills
100 to 120 litres	General farm use, mixed lance and boom work	Rack weight on slopes
200 litres and up	Large acreage, contractors	Often needs a trailer or a UTV

A heavy tank sits high and changes how the quad handles, especially on hillsides. A half-full tank on a steep field can feel very different from a full one on the flat, so test it somewhere safe first.

Pump and Pressure

Look at two numbers on any pump: flow in litres per minute and maximum pressure in bar. A lance gets by on modest flow. A boom with several nozzles needs more, or the end nozzles sputter and the spray pattern goes uneven. Pick a pump with a pressure regulator and bypass so liquid keeps moving through the tank and the chemical stays mixed.

Blocked nozzles ruin more spraying days than any other fault. Fit a filter at the tank outlet and keep a clean one in the nozzle, and most blockages never happen.

The pump also draws real current. Keep the engine running while you spray, or you’ll be pushing a flat quad home.

Spot Lance or Boom?

The lance

A lance suits scattered weeds: single docks, thistle patches, and rushes along a ditch. It’s cheap, flexible and reaches awkward spots. Hose length matters. Too short and you’re hauling the quad into the thick of it.

The boom

A boom covers a strip in one pass, typically a couple of metres wide and up to around four. It gives even coverage over larger areas, which matters for reseeding and whole-field weed control. Nozzle spacing and boom height decide how even the spray lands, so set both to the maker’s guidance and keep the boom level as you go.

If your jobs vary, buy a sprayer that offers both. Swapping between them takes minutes.

Nozzles, Calibration and Drift

Flat fan nozzles lay down an even band and suit most herbicide work. Hollow cone nozzles give finer coverage for other products. Low-drift types produce fewer fine droplets, which counts on breezy days, and in Ireland most days are breezy.

Calibrate before you spray anything expensive. Run clean water over a measured area, see how much comes out, then adjust speed or pressure until the rate matches the product label. Ten minutes with water saves wasting a tank of chemical.

Leave a clear gap between the sprayer and any watercourse, and stay away from strong wind. Professional users of plant protection products in Ireland need the right training and registration, so check the current requirements with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine before you start.

Mixing and Filling

Half-fill the tank with water first, add the chemical as the label directs, then top up. Mix only what the job needs, because leftover mix is a disposal problem. Fill from a clean supply with an air gap between the hose and tank so the chemical can’t syphon back into your water source.

Cleaning and Storage

Chemicals eat seals and clog lines if you leave them sitting. Rinse the tank, hoses, and nozzles with clean water after every job, and dispose of the rinse as the product label says. Never run the pump dry. In winter, drain everything, since a frozen pump head cracks, and you won’t find out until spring. Store the unit indoors.

Fitting It to Your Quad

Bolt the tank on securely, run a fused lead from the battery and route the hose away from the wheels and exhaust. A tidy install avoids the classic fault of a hose chafed through by a tyre. If the quad is too small for the tank you want, a UTV makes a sturdier platform for heavier loads.

Summary

Match the tank to your quad’s rack rating, then pick a pump with enough flow for the boom you want. Use a lance for spots and a boom for strips, fit filters, and calibrate with water before you spray. Rinse after every job and drain the lot before frost.
